BEAUMONT, Texas- HBU women's basketball dropped their Southland Conference Opener by a score of 63-50 Wednesday night at Lamar. Turnovers plagued the Huskies as the Cardinals were able to score 27 points off of 25 HBU turnovers. HBU also shot 50 percent from the free throw line which stunted each of the Huskies comeback attempts.
HBU (5-6, 0-1 SLC) had two players score in double digits on the night with
Megan Valdez-Crader scoring 19 on 7-13 shooitng and
Veronika Kirienko scoring 10 adding five rebounds and three blocks.Â
Lauren Calver put in seven points of her own while grabbing a game high 11 rebounds for the Huskies.
Lamar (8-4, 1-0 SLC) was lead by Miya Crump and Moe Kinard. Crump tallied 18 points and seven rebounds while Kinard scored 16 points and five rebounds. As a team the Cardinals defense propelled them as they recorded 10 blocks and 15 steals on the night.Â
Early in the game Lamar came out firing on all cylinders scoring the games first nine points. HBU started to settle in and was able to cut into the Cardinals lead by securing a few stops on the defensive end and snagging a few easy layups. The second quarter was back and forth as neither team was able to make up ground. The Huskies seemed to be gathering momentum offensively throughout the game outscoring the Cardinals in the third behind the scoring of Valdex-Crader and Kirienko. While HBU's offense continued to score points, Lamar was able to regroup in the fourth quarter and put up 22 points of their own to seal the victory 63-50.
HBU returns home to Sharp Gym to face off against New Orleans Saturday Jan. 5th at 2:00 p.m.The Huskies will then travel to Thibodaux, Louisiana to matchup against the Colonels of Nicholls State Saturday Jan. 12th at 1:00 p.m.
