HOUSTON, TX- HBU women's basketball fell to the Bearkats of Sam Houston Saturday afternoon in Sharp Gym. After trailing by as much as 20 the Huskies battled back in the early parts of the third quarter to get within seven, until the Sam Houston went on a 7-2 run to end the third to shutdown the Huskies comeback attempt and win by a score of 74-63.
HBU (6-9, 1-4 SLC) was led in scoring by
Amanda Johnson who recorded 14 points on the afternoon. She was helped by the good offensive looks that were dished to her by
Sophie Taylor and
Megan Valdez-Crader. Taylor led the Huskies with six assists to go along with her 12 points and four rebounds. Valdez-Crader had five assists to go with her 11 points and five rebounds. As a team HBU shot 83.3 percent from the free-throw line, but Sam Houston had more than double the Huskies trips to the line.
Sam Houston (8-7, 3-2 SLC) had a varied attack with four players in double-digit scoring. The Bearkats had two players record double-doubles on the afternoon with Dominique Maxwell scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. As well as Lydia Baxter who scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Jaylon Walker was able to put up 16 points of her own and Jenniffer Oramas scored 12 points with eight assists. The Bearkats took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe knocking down 22 of 28.
HBU will now hit road to take on the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana Jan.23 and then travel to Lake Charles to face against McNeese Jan.26.
