HOUSTON, TX- HBU women's basketball struggles in the third quarter getting out-scored by 13 points in the period, falling against Abilene Christian 62-72 Wednesday night in Sharp Gym.
Shannon Jones recorded a double-double on the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jones had a strong second half which saw six of her 10 points scored and seven of her 11 rebounds.
Megan Valdez-Crader turned out another solid performance with 12 points four rebounds and six assists. Those six assists tied for the team lead with
Sophie Taylor who recorded nine points and three rebounds to go with those six assists.
ACU (11-5, 4-1) only had six total scorers on the night, but four of them went for double digits. Dominque Golightly led the way with 20 points on 7-12 shooting. She was followed up by Lexie Ducat who worked hard in the paint and recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ducat was short the game high in rebounds behind her fellow teammate Makayla Mabry who recorded 14 on the night.
The first quarter points were hard to come by as both teams combined for 12 turnovers in the quarter and shot a combined 30 percent from the field. The action picked up in the second quarter where HBU's diverse scoring attack allowed them to scratch back to take the halftime lead 28-27. Abilene made some halftime adjustments that helped them get off to a hot start to the beginning of the third quarter. This included a 10 point run by the Wildcats in the first two and a half minutes of the third. This third quarter burst by ACU was led by Breanna Wright who went 3-4 from the field in the third with all of those attempts coming from three-point range. HBU tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter going on a seven point run in the early parts of the fourth before the Huskies were forced to start fouling. Abilene Christian knocked down 8-10 free-throws in the quarter and HBU was unable to close the gap before the final horn blew ACU-72 HBU-62.
HBU will take on Sam Houston this Saturday Jan. 19th at 2:00 p.m. with the men's teams matching up later that evening. The Huskies will then return to Louisiana for tilts against Southeastern Louisiana Jan. 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and McNeese Jan. 26th at 1:00 p.m.
