Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB: HBU Falls to Nicholls on the Road

THIBODAUX, Louisiana- HBU women's basketball dropped their contest against the Nicholls Colonels 77-54 Saturday afternoon in Stopher Gym. The story of the game was rebounds and finishing around the rim for the Huskies. HBU lost the rebounding battle 49-33 and constantly had shots fall just off the rim that led to the Colonels to be able to stretch their lead out all the way to 24 in the last minute of the game.

HBU falls to (6-7, 1-2 SLC) with loss to Nicholls that saw senior Amanda Johnson continue to succeed in scoring as she put up 16 points off the bench. Junior guard Sophie Taylor was the other Husky to get to double digit scoring in the game with 12 points. Taylor knocked down two of HBU's five three-pointers in the game and completed two separate three-point plays on some strong drives to the basket. The Huskies struggled at the free-throw line shooting 50 percent on 18 attempts.

Nicholls (9-7, 2-1 SLC) gets back in the win column after dropping a close matchup to Stephen F. Austin earlier this week. The Colonels were led by the stellar shooting of Bryanna Washington who knocked down 9-15 for 19 points and grabbed 10 total rebounds to give her a double-double. Airi Hamilton followed her up with 14 points of her own on 6-7 shooting. Cassidy Barrios recorded 14 points 15 rebounds seven assists and three steals on the day being the glue for the Colonels team.

HBU was successful in limiting the amount of looks of Cassidy Barrios in the first half that saw her score only two points with both coming from the free-throw line, but Bryanna Washington stepped up for Nicholls knocking down open shots as Barrios dished out to her. HBU kept up with Nicholls Colonels as the Colonels had 10 turnovers in the first half limiting their offensive possessions. HBU kept the game close all the way through the third quarter still only trailing by single digits, before the Colonels pulled away for good as Barrios got hot in the second half and HBU continued to lose the battle on the glass. HBU pushed the tempo to try and cut into the lead, but were mostly one and done on the offensive side as the Colonels finished the game by the final score of 77-54.

HBU will come back to Houston to face off against Abilene Christian Jan. 16 and Sam Houston Jan. 19 in Sharp Gym before hitting the road to finish off January on the road at Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese. Links to Live Stats and Audio/Video can be found on HBUHuskies.com
