HOUSTON – Sam Houston State got a goal in the 18th minute but the HBU women's soccer team evened the score in the second half to secure a 1-1 tie on Sunday evening at Strake Jesuit's Clay Stadium in Southland Conference play.

In the first 10 minutes, HBU (4-5-1, 2-0-1 SLC) had a goal called off due to an offside call and Sam Houston State (1-7-2, 0-2-1 SLC) got on the board at the 17:16 mark when a cross from Grace Stine found Micaela Birt in the middle of the 18-yard box where she directed a header past HBU keeper Alanis Guevara. The Huskies out-shot the Bearkats 6-to-3 in the half but managed just one on target.

In the second period, Gabby Rodriguez put a shot on goal off a Megan Rickert corner kick in the 52nd minute but SHSU's Abby DeLozier made the stop. A Bearkat foul set the Huskies up with a free kick near midfield in the 70th minute. Bryce Reynolds took the free kick for HBU with Baylii Bieke directing the ball to freshman Talin Rizo at the top of the 18 where she fired to the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1. In the two overtime periods, senior Sabriah Spencer managed the lone attempt on target within the first 30 seconds of the first extra period.

HBU held a 19-to-13 advantage in shots with the Huskies putting seven attempts on goal to the Bearkats' four. Alanis Guevara made three saves for HBU while SHSU's DeLozier made six stops. Spencer led the Huskies with four shot attempts with three on target. For Rizo, the goal was her second of the season.

"Unfortunately, we did not play good soccer in the first half and gave up a goal," said head coach Misty Jones. "We fought our way back into the game to tie it up, but we are certainly disappointed with the tie."

The Huskies head to Louisiana for their next two matches as they continue their Southland Conference schedule. On Friday, Sep. 28, is a visit to Thibodaux, La. for a matchup with Nicholls at 4:00 p.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday, Sep. 30, against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La.
