HOUSTON – The HBU women's soccer team earned its second shutout in as many Southland Conference games on Friday evening at Sorrels Field, giving senior goalkeeper
Alanis Guevara the program record for shutouts and putting the Huskies alone atop the SLC standings with six points.
For Guevara, Friday marked the 13
th shutout of her career and puts her alone at the top of the all-time list for career shutouts at HBU (4-5-0, 2-0-0 SLC). The senior made three saves to secure the clean sheet for the third time this season.
The Huskies got the scoring started in the 15
th minute with a corner kick by
Megan Rickert.
Sabriah Spencer put a header on goal off the corner with SFA (3-4-0, 1-1-0 SLC) goalkeeper Maddie Talbot making the save but the rebound fell to
Jessica Nevils who knocked it in for her second consecutive game with a goal coming off a rebound of a Spencer shot. It was also Nevils' second game-winner in as many matches.
The Ladyjacks put all three of their shots on goal for the game in a seven minute span with Guevara truly getting tested on just one of them, making a diving stop on a Katelyn Termini shot in the 30
th minute. The score remained 1-0 until the final minute of the first half with an SFA defender stopping an
Avery Cortez attempt but off the rebound, the ball bounced around inside the 18-yard box until
Autumn Wildung found
Talin Rizo who scored her first collegiate goal with a header with just 21 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, SFA attempted three shots in the first five minutes with all of them off target. HBU put the game out of reach with Spencer finding
Gabby Rodriguez who launched a rocket from 25 yards out past a diving Talbot to give the Huskies the 3-0 lead in the 54
th minute. The Huskies forced Talbot into two more saves the rest of the way.
Nevils now has three goals on the season and both the Huskies' game-winners in SLC play. Rodriguez has two and Rizo has one. Spencer assisted on a pair of goals, giving her three for the season and a team-leading seven points.
"It was good to put a dominant performance together," said head coach
Misty Jones. "We were good in the back. We were fantastic in the midfield. We took tons of shots and scored our opportunities. Everything we talked about that we would need to do to be successful tonight, we did. SFA is a good team and I think they will do well in the conference. It was a great team effort. We played with high energy and as we told the team, the bar is set now so we expect these kinds of performances. I was very pleased with the performance tonight."
HBU welcomes Sam Houston State to Sorrels Field on Sunday, Sep. 23, evening at 7:00 p.m. as Southland play continues.
