HOUSTON – HBU and Abilene Christian were deadlocked at 0-0 for 107 minutes until a rebound off a
Sabriah Spencer header was knocked in by
Jessica Nevils to give the Huskies women's soccer team a 1-0 double overtime victory in Southland Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Clay Stadium on the campus of Strake Jesuit.
The Huskies (3-5-0, 1-0-0 SLC) got an early look with a free kick from
Avery Cortez and Spencer getting past a defender with nothing but the goalkeeper in front of her but she just missed on the attempt and was unable to re-direct it on goal. After trading corner kicks, Abilene Christian (5-3-0, 0-1-0 SLC) got a header attempt on goal from Brooke Lenz but
Alanis Guevara was there to make her first save of the game in the ninth minute.
ACU controlled much of the action the rest of the first half, totaling four shots on goal while HBU's only other attempt of the half came with just over a minute remaining as a
Noor Abukishk shot was blocked by a defender.
In the second half, the Wildcats again came out testing Guevara. The senior keeper made three saves in the first 7:05 of the period. ACU attempted 13 shots in the second half to the Huskies' one, which came off the foot of
Megan Rickert from a distance and was saved by ACU's Rachel Johnson.
In the first overtime, ACU saw a pair of shots go wide while
Autumn Wildung's header was on target but Johnson again made the stop. Brittney Harris got a shot on target at the 101:08 mark but Guevara was up the task with her 10
th save of the match. A foul by ACU set the Huskies up with a free kick from close to midfield with around three minutes remaining. Freshman
Bryce Reynolds lined up the kick and found Spencer in the 18-yard box where she flicked a header on target with Johnson getting her fingertips on it to make the save. The rebound fell behind her and to the side where a scrum ensued with players from both teams going at the ball but Nevils was able to knock it home and secure the win.
Guevara's 10 saves were a season-high for the senior and give her 52 total saves on the season. The senior moves to 3-5-0 on the season in goal. For Nevils, it was her second goal of the season and of her collegiate career and her first game-winner.
"Today certainly wasn't a pretty win," said head coach
Misty Jones. "Our greatest attribute today was that we worked our tails off and grinded out the win. ACU played a high energy and high intensity game. They are a talented group and will definitely do well in conference. Alanis was fantastic in goal to shut them out. She definitely made some game-winning saves."
The Huskies continue SLC play next weekend at home with Stephen F. Austin coming to Sorrels Field on Friday, Sep. 21, at 7:00 p.m. and then Sam Houston State on Sunday, Sep. 23, again at 7:00 p.m.
