PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – On Friday evening, the HBU women's soccer team saw goals from three different players in a decisive 3-0 shutout at the PVAMU Soccer Complex.
The Huskies (2-2-0) bounced back from a tough road trip to Arizona last weekend with a strong shutout on the road at Prairie View A&M (1-3-0). It took just over five minutes for
Sabriah Spencer to put an attempt on goal but PVAMU's Josiah Quinn made the save. Priarie View's first shot on goal came in the 12
th minute but it was HBU's
Gabby Rodriguez who first found the back of the net. Seconds after subbing on it was Rodriguez who scored the eventual game-winner at the 23:00 mark for the first goal of the season.
After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Panthers' Gina Zavala de Rojas put her second shot of the match on goal in the 46
th minute but the Huskies'
Alanis Guevara came up with the save and it was the last time she would be tested the rest of the game. Spencer hit paydirt at the 78:08 mark for her second goal of the year, putting the Huskies ahead 2-0. Just over two minutes later, HBU's
Avery Cortez converted on a penalty kick to push the score to 3-0.
Friday's match was the second time this season that both Spencer and Cortez have scored goals in the same contest after Cortez scored a pair and Spencer had one in the Huskies 3-1 win over Houston to open the season. For the game, eight different HBU players put attempts on goal as HBU out-shot the Panthers by a 17-to-6 margin.
"It's always great to get a win on the road," said HBU head coach
Misty Jones. "We had a very good second half and were able to put Prairie View under some pressure. It was nice to have the scoring spread around with multiple people involved. Alanis showed great poise and leadership in the goal to earn the shutout."
The Huskies will head north on Sunday, Sep. 2, for a matchup with SMU in Dallas at 7:00 p.m.
