WBB: HBU Rolls by McMurry in Season Opener, 92-41

Six Huskies score in double figures

HOUSTON – Sophomore forward Taylor Kollmorgen posted the first double-double of the season for the Huskies, as the HBU women's basketball team rolled by McMurry, 92-41, in the season opener Sunday night at Sharp Gym.

Kollmorgen tied with Junior guard Shannon Jones and senior guard Amanda Johnson with 14 points for the Huskies (1-0). Kollmorgen added 10 rebounds and two blocks to her totals. Jones added seven rebounds and five steals, and Johnson's 14 points were on 67 percent shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Freshman guard Julija Vujakovic added 13 points and six rebounds and junior guard Sophie Taylor added nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc, while junior transfer Takara Wade led all players with 10 assists to go along with four points and three rebounds.

McMurry (0-2) was led by Junior forward Skyler Reyna, who led all scorers with 16, and added 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Savannah Johnson followed Reyna up with six points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Brittany Rodgers had six points and handed out a pair of assists.

McMurry shot 29.3 percent from the floor, 4-of-18 from 3-point range, and 3-of-6 from the free throw line. HBU shot 49.3% from the floor, 5-of-16 from 3-point range, and 17-of-21 from the free throw line. HBU outrebounded McMurry, 49-31, and outscored them in the paint, 54-16.

The Huskies took off from the tip quickly running out to a 14-0 lead and finished the quarter leading by a score of 28-5 behind 10 points and nine rebounds by Taylor Kollmorgen. Freshman newcomer Julija Vujakovic had a strong second quarter posting seven points on 2-3 shooting and 3 rebounds. The Huskies continued to stretch their lead ending the half up 52-13. The Huskies began to slow down in the second half as McMurray made adjustments on both sides of the floor. The adjustments were not quite enough as the Huskies outscored the Warhawks, 40-28, in the second half.

The Huskies quickly return back to Sharp Gym Wednesday night at 7 p.m. facing off against Texas A&M International.
