SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Senior
Autumn Wildung scored the lone goal of the match as the HBU women's team continued its best ever start to a Southland Conference slate by defeating Incarnate Word 1-0 on Friday evening at Benson Stadium.
At the start of the game, it took some time for both teams to get their footing offensively. HBU (7-5-1, 5-0-1 SLC) got its first shot late in the 19
th minute when
Gabby Rodriguez put an attempt on goal but it was stopped by the UIW (1-8-1, 1-3-1 SLC) back line. The Cardinals' Ari Cantu had a shot stopped by HBU goalkeeper
Alanis Guevara at the 27:05 mark and just 50 seconds later Rodriguez had another shot saved to keep things scoreless.
In the 29
th minute,
Sabriah Spencer won a header on a corner kick but her shot attempt missed high. Incarnate Word then closed the half with pressure on the Huskies with a pair of corner kicks and two shots on target but the game went to the half even at 0-0.
In the second period at the 54:54 mark, UIW's Sabrina Martineau had a shot stopped by Guevara who quickly sent the ball out wide. HBU was quick to counter off the Martineau shot by pushing the ball ahead with Rodriguez working up the left side and finding Wildung in front of the net near the back post where she easily found the net and gave the Huskies the lead in the 56
th minute. HBU kept the Cardinals' offense at bay the rest of the way, allowing one off-target attempt while also keeping pressure on UIW goalkeeper Sydney Huntsinger.
For the match, the two teams were nearly even in shot attempts with HBU holding a slight 12-to-11 edge. The goal was Wildung's second of the season and her first game-winner of the year while Rodriguez now has three assists. In goal, Guevara recorded shutout number five on the season with a four-save effort.
"I'm proud of the girls for their fight and perseverance in getting three road wins," said head coach
Misty Jones. "It wasn't always pretty, but we'll take the wins. It will be nice to be at home for a few games next weekend. We are taking a much needed rest this weekend and will be refreshed and ready for our next matches."
By winning, HBU picked up three points and maintained its spot atop the league standings with a total of 16 points. Central Arkansas is in second with 12 points, having played one less game than the Huskies.
The Huskies will play their final two home matches of the season next weekend beginning on Friday, Oct. 12, with Senior Night when they take on Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m. at Sorrels Field. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 14, HBU will close out the home portion of the schedule against Central Arkansas.
