HOUSTON – The HBU women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to seven on senior night at Sorrels Field with three of the Huskies' five seniors accounting for the game-winning goal in an overtime 1-0 Southland Conference matchup with Northwestern State.
The Huskies (8-5-1, 6-0-1 SLC) got a shot attempt right off the bat but
Talin Rizo's attempt missed wide. HBU then earned a pair of corner kicks within the first six minutes of the game before Northwestern State (7-8-0, 1-6-0 SLC) got its first good look in the 12
th minute when a Jalen Donaldson shot hit the crossbar before going straight down and bouncing up into the crossbar again and out into the hands of HBU goalkeeper
Alanis Guevara.
In the second half, both teams were even in shot attempts with six apiece. The Huskies put their first shot on target at the 75:56 mark with sophomore
Avery Cortez's shot being stopped by NSU goalkeeper Kayla Bomben. That was the only shot attempt on the mark in the second period.
HBU earned a corner kick less than three minutes into the overtime period and it took less than a minute for the Huskies end the game.
Baylii Bieke gained control in the Huskies defensive end, sent a pass up to
Autumn Wildung who flicked the ball ahead with a header that freed up
Sabriah Spencer to make a run behind the defense where she dribbled to the left past the keeper and scored into an open net in the 94
th minute.
The goal was the fourth of the season for Spencer and gives her 59 points for her career, moving her into a tie for third on HBU's all-time scoring list with
Ellee Hall. For both Wildung and Bieke, the assists were the fourth of the season. In goal, Guevara made a pair of saves in earning her sixth shutout of the season.
"It wasn't pretty, but, the girls played hard," said head coach
Misty Jones. "I feel like we always have a bit of a target on our back based on our history and how we're doing in conference right now. I think we, a little bit, just weathered the storm today. We kept fighting and finally put together a good piece. The goal was fantastic. It was senior to senior to senior. They've really led us this year and that's been great and it was great to pick up a win for the seniors on Senior Night."
With the win, the Huskies kept pace atop the standings with Central Arkansas and Lamar both also winning. HBU maintained a one point lead over UCA with Lamar two points back in third.
HBU will close out the home portion of its 2018 schedule on Sunday, Oct. 14, with a matchup against second place Central Arkansas at Sorrels Field with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
