CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The HBU women's soccer team closed out the 2018 regular season at Jack Dugan Stadium on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, moving up into second place in the Southland Conference standings and securing the No. 2 seed in the SLC tournament.

HBU (10-7-1, 8-2-1 SLC) surpassed Lamar in the standings to take second place on the final day of conference play as the Cardinals lost to McNeese on Friday evening. As a result, the Huskies will take on Stephen F. Austin in the opening round of the SLC championship tournament. HBU was picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll of Southland Conference head coaches and sports information directors.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-9-3, 2-7-2 SLC) opened the game with an attempt on goal by Celia Hilsabeck in the second minute but Alanis Guevara made the first of her five saves in the match. Freshman Talin Rizo put the Huskies first shot on goal in the 14th minute. The Islanders out-shot HBU 8-to-5 in the first half with four shots on goal to the Huskies' two. Near the end of the first half, at the 42:17 mark, senior Gabby Rodriguez knocked home a goal to put HBU ahead 1-0 heading into the intermission.

In the second half, Sabriah Spencer nearly made it a two-goal match less than four minutes in but her shot bounced off the post. HBU sophomore Noor Abukishk had a pair of shots stopped by Islander goalkeeper Abbie Flax in the 84th minute and TAMUCC put its only attempt on shot in the second half at the 87:29 mark.

The goal was Rodriguez's fourth of the season, giving her 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists) for the season. In goal, Guevara made five saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season and bring her save percentage to .803.

"It was great to end the regular season with a win and a shutout," said head coach Misty Jones. "The girls have faced some adversity this season and just keep fighting. I am proud of the effort and excited to see how we do in the tournament."

HBU will face Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 5:00 p.m. in the first round of the SLC tournament at Lamar's LU Soccer Complex.
