THIBODAUX, La. – HBU's five seniors all made their mark as the Huskies played their second Southland Conference road game in less than 24 hours, defeating Nicholls 4-0 on Monday afternoon at Yockey Bernard Field.
Monday's game was originally scheduled for Friday, Sep. 28, at 4:00 p.m. but heavy rain caused the postponement of the game.
For senior goalkeeper
Alanis Guevara, the win was the 25
th of her career placing her alone atop HBU's all-time list for career wins. She already became the program's all-time leader in both saves and shutouts earlier this season. Guevara has now won at least six games in goal for four-straight years.
On the attack from the start, HBU (6-5-1, 4-0-1 SLC) got a pair of shots on target from
Jessica Nevils in the opening 12 minutes but the first goal didn't come until the 20
th minute when
Gabby Rodriguez scored from just outside the box with an assist by
Avery Cortez. Less than four minutes later,
Sabriah Spencer flicked a header on to
Autumn Wildung for a breakaway behind the defense, freeing her for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 Husky lead. It then took just 36 seconds for Spencer to get in on the scoring action as she got past the keeper for a goal with an assist by
Baylii Bieke.
After not attempting a single shot in the first half, Nicholls (2-9-0, 0-4-0 SLC) took three attempts in the first five minutes of the second period, forcing Guevara into a pair of saves. The Huskies quickly responded, however, with
Emma Dooher receiving an assist from Rodriguez in front of the goal and scoring to the right side of the net in the 54
th minute for her first goal of the season. The Colonels put their final two shots on target within the ensuing four minutes but Guevara stopped both the Huskies held on until the game was called with 2:56 remaining due to lightning in the area.
Rodriguez and Spencer, both seniors, finished with a goal and an assist each while bringing Spencer's season point total to 10 (3 goals, 4 assists) and Rodriguez's to eight points (3 goals, 2 assists). Wildung, also a senior, scored her first goal of the season while Bieke was credited with her third assist of the year.
"It was a long weekend with the game being postponed and a little tough playing two games in 24 hours but the girls were resilient," said head coach
Misty Jones. "I was proud of the focus and effort. They took care of business this weekend. Our seniors carried us today with everyone getting in the stat sheet. They really set the tone for us this weekend."
As a team, HBU now has 13 points and a 4-0-1 record in Southland Conference play this season to keep pace at the top of the standings. Defending champion Lamar, with a 3-0-1 SLC record, is the only other unbeaten team in the league. The Huskies will stay on the road for their next match, a Friday, Oct. 5, matchup with Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
