HAMMOND, Louisiana – HBU men's basketball pays a visit to Southeastern Louisiana, one of five one-loss teams in the Southland Conference, on Wednesday evening with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. at the University Center on SLU's campus. Wednesday's game between the Huskies (4-14, 0-5 SLC) and the Lions (10-8, 4-1 SLC) marks the first game outside the state of Texas for HBU since the team played Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. on Dec. 20.
HBU has had a different leading scorer in each Southland game so far this season. Most recently, freshman
Oliver Lynch-Daniels led the Huskies with a career-high 20 points in 26 minutes on the floor in HBU's loss at Sam Houston State on Saturday, Jan. 13.
The Huskies have three underclassmen averaging at least 10 points per game for the season with sophomore
Jalon Gates at 10.5 ppg, freshman
Ian DuBose at 13 ppg and freshman
David Caraher at 14.9 ppg, good for the ninth-best scoring average in the league. In 18 games this season, an underclassman has led the team in scoring 14 times.
Southeastern Louisiana starts an experienced lineup, with four seniors and a junior, and is led in scoring by junior point guard Marlain Veal who is averaging 12.9 points per game. Veal also leads the Lions with a conference-best 5.3 assists per game to go along with 5.3 rebounds per outing and 33 steals on the season. Jordan Capps,, who missed all of the 2016-17 season due to injury, is adding 12 ppg while Moses Greenwood leads the team on the boards with 6.8 rpg.
Last season, the two teams split a pair of games with the home team picking up the win in each game. In last season's game in Hammond, the Lions won 83-71 while HBU won 81-74 in Sharp Gym.
HBU returns to Sharp Gym on Saturday, Jan. 20, to take on the McNeese Cowboys at 7:00 p.m.
