WSOC: Huskies Host UTRGV and GCU This Weekend

HBU’s delayed home-opener comes just a week before starting Southland play

HOUSTON – HBU opens the home portion of its schedule while also closing out non-conference play this weekend when the Huskies host UT Rio Grande Valley and Grand Canyon at Sorrels Field.
 
HBU (0-3) first faces the Vaqueros (3-2) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. UTRGV is led by junior Diandra Aliaga with five points on two goals and one assist. The Vaqueros have face three Southland school already this year, sporting a 2-1 record in those matches, with wins over Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and most recently, a loss to Lamar. Erica Gonzalez has started three matches in goal, boasting a 2-1 record with one shutout and just two goals against. As a team, the Vaqueros are holding opponents to less than one goal per game and have out-shot the competition 66-41.
 
Grand Canyon (3-3) has won its last three matches, out-scoring Weber State, Nevada and Detroit Mercy 6-1 during that stretch. Scoring has been at a premium in the 'Lopes matches, with GCU scoring five total on the season with opponents netting just four. Seniors Milla Benedetti and Madison Cox each have two goals thus far with Benedetti leading the team in attempts with 19. Blakely Fraasch has played every minute between the pipes with just four goals against and 17 saves. The 'Lopes play UC Santa Barbara on Thursday before heading to Houston.
 
HBU owns a 2-0-1 mark all-time against UTRGV, with those two wins coming against UT-Brownsville which merged with UT-Pan American to become UTRGV. Sunday will mark the first ever meeting between the Huskies and the 'Lopes.
 
Southland Conference play starts for the Huskies on Friday, Sep. 15, in Abilene, Texas against Abilene Christian at 5:00 p.m.
