ABILENE, Texas – Emma Dooher scored her first career goal but a double-overtime goal sent the HBU women's soccer team to a 2-1 loss to Abilene Christian at Elmer Gray Stadium in the Southland Conference opening match on Friday evening.

Abilene Christian (3-5, 1-0 SLC) was on the offensive early, attempting five shots in the first 23 minutes to the Huskies' (1-4-1, 0-1) one. The Wildcats' next shot came off the foot of sophomore Shay Johnson in the 25th minute and found the net with an assist from Sam Vestal. HBU found its answer less than eight minutes later when Dooher took a Megan Rickert pass and beat the ACU keeper to tie things up at 1-1.

In the second half, Abilene Christian again enjoyed the majority of the offensive chances. Despite nine shots on goal in the period by the Wildcats, regulation came to an end with the score still even. ACU put a shot on goal in the first overtime but no goal. In the second overtime, a yellow card on Kaimyn Beal set ACU up for a penalty kick in the 106th minute. Senior Chloe Fifer took the kick and converted to give Abilene the 2-1 win.

HBU goalkeeper Alanis Guevara took the loss in goal for the Huskies despite making 11 saves amidst a 34-shot barrage by the Wildcats. The Huskies attempted nine shots for the match with two of them on goal.

"I'm proud of the girls for fighting hard and never giving up," said head coach Misty Jones. "Emma scored a fantastic goal in the first half to tie the game. Alanis played extremely well and had some key saves to keep the game tied. While ACU certainly led in shots, I felt that the dangerous chances were pretty equal. It's tough to give up a penalty after playing so hard for 105 minutes. ACU played a hard, well-fought game. Fortunately, the conference season is long and we will get our results."

The Huskies will be off until next Friday, Sep. 22, when they travel north to Nacogdoches to take on Stephen F. Austin at 7:00 p.m.
