HOUSTON –
Katie Turner made eight saves while
Ellee Hall and
Gabby Rodriguez took care of the scoring and the HBU women's soccer team earned their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
Both teams saw scoring opportunities in the early-going with Grand Canyon (3-4-1) holding a 5-4 advantage in shots in the first 14 minutes of the match. GCU came close in the 24
th minute when Anyssa De Vera put a header on goal at point blank range but Turner was there to make the stop and keep things scoreless. HBU (1-3-1) was able to break through at the 33:03 mark when
Charlotte Vancura sent a cross into the box and
Ellee Hall was there to one-time it into the back of the net and put the Huskies ahead 1-0, a lead they would hold until the half. The 'Lopes attempted 17 shots in the half, taking a number of shots from well outside the 18-yard box.
Turner and GCU keeper, Blakely Fraasch, were both tested in the second half though HBU managed just three shots total in the half. In the 82
nd minute, a cross from
Alicia Torrez found Rodriguez near the back post where she found the back of the net on the header for her second goal in as many matches. The goal put the match away and solidified the Husky lead, holding off GCU for the shutout the rest of the way.
Grand Canyon attempted 28 shots in the match, but just eight of those were on goal. Turner stopped eight shots to earn the win in the goal, her first win of the season. The Huskies put six shots on goal of their total nine shots attempted. Grand Canyon held a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hall's goal was her third of the season and the 18
th of her career at HBU. For Rodriguez, she now has two for the season and the 10
th of her career. The Huskies picked up their first win of the year in the final non-conference matchup of the season.
"I think we put together a good game," said head coach
Misty Jones. "The thing is, we've been playing really well. It's nice to be able to finish some nice goals and our goals this weekend were all really nice. It was good to see that. An unbeaten weekend going into conference is a nice morale booster for us. I'm pleased overall with the play. We switched up the lineup going into the weekend and I think we've found our rhythm. The girls off the bench did a great job, which makes a huge difference on Sundays."
Southland Conference play picks up on Friday, Sep. 15 in Abilene, Texas where the Huskies will take on Abilene Christian at 5:00 p.m.
