BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Junior
Devon Grant got the scoring started in the 32
nd minute with
Mark Johnson and
Malik Key pushing the score to 3-0 as the HBU men's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (1-2-1) earned a number of early corner kicks with five in the first nine minutes to go along with the first three shots of the match, though none of them were on goal. GWU's Mads Rismoen put the first attempt on target in the 26
th minute but
Chance Pope made the save. Neither team was able to break through until the 31:15 mark when
Grant banged home the goal with an assist by
Dominick Faletto on a cross.
The Huskies (2-2) took the 1-0 lead into the half and came out quickly in the second half with freshman Johnson recording his first career goal in the 50
th minute on a rebound from a GWU save and extending the HBU lead. Less than 12 minutes later, Key possessed a through ball from
Gianluca Natera and snuck a shot between the Bulldog keeper's legs for the 3-0 HBU lead. The score remained 3-0 until the 80
th minute when Magnus Moldjord found the net after a cross into the box from Alain Delgado.

Chance Pope finished the day with three saves in earning his first win of the season and evening his record between the pipes at 1-1. The Huskies held a 14-13 advantage in shots but put 10 on goal the Bulldogs' four. GWU had 11 corner kicks to three for HBU.
HBU will have a 12-day break until its next match when the Huskies travel to San Antonio for a non-conference matchup with fellow WAC member Incarnate Word, taking on the Cardinals on Friday, Sep. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
