SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The HBU men's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 shutout over Incarnate Word on Friday evening at Benson Stadium thanks to
Malik Key's second goal of the season.
Both teams managed some shots early but it wasn't until the 29
th minute when
Devon Grant put the first shot of the match on goal for HBU (3-2-0). Just seconds ahead of the end of the first half, Joe Brown put the first shot on goal for Incarnate Word (2-3-1) on a corner kick but the HBU defense was able to keep it out of the goal.
UIW's Trinidad Luna managed multiple shots in the first five minutes but to no avail, with Husky goalkeeper
Harrison Veith turning away a shot in the 50
th minute. A few minutes later, at the 53:17 mark, a
Dominick Faletto cross into the box found the foot of Key who directed it to the back of the net and gave HBU the 1-0 lead. It was the last attempt on target for HBU while the Cardinals managed just one more.
For Key, it was his second goal of the season and the seventh of his career. Key and Faletto both lead the Huskies with four points, with Key's coming from his two goals while Faletto owns a goal and two assists. Veith is now 2-0 between the pipes after earning his first shutout as a Husky.
The Huskies will continue along on the road, heading to Las Vegas, Nev. to open the WAC portion of their 2017 schedule, facing off with the Rebels at Johann Field on Thursday, Sep. 28, at 9:00 p.m. CST.
