DENTON, Texas – After Hurricane Harvey cancelled a match with Baylor this past Sunday, the HBU women's soccer team will have gone two full weeks between matches when they take on North Texas on Sunday, Sep. 3, at 1:00 p.m. at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies (0-2) dropped their first two matches of the year at the OHANA Hotels by Outrigger Shootout in Hawaii, falling to Fairfield 2-1 in double overtime and dropping a 2-1 decision to Utah Valley. Senior
Ellee Hall owns both of HBU's goals this season, putting the Huskies ahead 1-0 against Fairfield and converting on a penalty kick late in the matchup with UVU.
Seniors Jessica Gebhardt and
Casey Basso, along with junior
Baylii Bieke, have all played every minute of the season so far for HBU, helping to anchor the Husky defensive effort. Junior goalkeeper
Alanis Guevara made 17 saves in the first two matches of the season.
The Mean Green (2-2) has a pair of wins over Southland Conference opponents, defeating Incarnate Word, 3-0, and downing Abilene Christian by a score of 2-0. While both those wins came on the road, UNT is 0-2 on its home field but both losses came against stiff competition, losing 2-0 to No. 17 Arkansas and 1-0 to Texas. The loss to Arkansas snapped a 17-game winning streak at home for North Texas.
UNT has gotten goals from five different players with senior Tori Phillips totaling four points (1 goal, 2 assists) to lead the team. Sophomore goalkeeper Miranda Schoening sports a 0.77 goals against average and has stopped 17 shots through four matches.
HBU is 0-2 all-time against North Texas with the last meeting coming at Sorrels Field during the 2014 season with the Mean Green earning a 2-0 win.
The Huskies will open the home portion of the season on Friday, Sep. 8, when they host UT Rio Grande Valley at Sorrels Field with a 7:00 p.m. start time. HBU will then host Grand Canyon two days later on Sunday, Sep. 10, at 1:00 p.m. for its final non-conference match of the year.
