HONOLULU, Hawaii – The HBU women's soccer team kicks off the 2017 regular season on island time, facing Fairfield on Friday night at 9:30 p.m. central time at the OHANA Hotels by Outrigger Shootout hosted by Hawaii at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies are coming off a 2016 season in which they won their second Southland Conference Tournament championship in a three-year span. HBU returns seven starters and 14 letterwinners from last season's team.
HBU's returners include senior
Ellee Hall and juniors
Sabriah Spencer and
Gabby Rodriguez who all scored six goals in 2016. Additionally, seniors
Casey Basso and
Jennifer Gebhardt return to help anchor the Husky defense after starting a combined 41 games last season.
Fairfield enters the season after posting a 3-13-2 record in 2016 and returns 21 letterwinners. Last year, the Stags managed to out-shoot their opponents but struggled to find the back of the net, scoring just 11 goals to their opponents' 30. Fairfield is led by senior midfielder Faith Daley who has made 42 career starts.
HBU will conclude the tournament against former Great West rival Utah Valley. The Wolverines return their top two scorers from last season in senior Alexis Peterson (five goals) and sophomore Breanna DeWaal (four goals) from a 2016 squad that went 10-8-2. The Huskies own a 3-6-1 all-time record against the Wolverines with a number those matchups coming in the Great West tournament.
The Huskies and Wolverines will square off on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. central. Following their season-openings matches in Hawaii, the Huskies return home to host Baylor on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 5:00 p.m.
