BSB: Nicholls Caps Comeback Over HBU in 9th, 3-2

Junior LF Spencer Halloran hits second home run of the season for Huskies.

THIBODAUX, Louisiana – HBU led most of the way, but Nicholls scratched across a run in the eight to tie, then scored the game-winning run in the ninth for a 3-2 victory to sweep the Southland Conference series Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.

Spencer Halloran went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Huskies (8-10, 0-3 SLC), while senior centerfielder Zane Otten singled to extend his hitting streak to six games.

Alex Tucker went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Colonels (12-8, 5-1), and Joey Morales doubled and scored a run.

Sophomore righthander Zach Carter (3-2) went the distance in the loss for HBU, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 8.1 innings.

Adam Tarver (4-1) picked up the win for Nicholls, recording the final two outs in the ninth. Starter Mike Hanchar took a no-decision, giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 8.1 innings.

Junior shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson singled in the third, then Halloran followed with a two-run blast to left, his second home run of the year, to put the Huskies ahead, 2-0.

Nicholls got on the board in the sixth, as Quade Smith reached on an infield single and Gavin Wehby walked. Tucker delivered a single to leftcenter to plate Smith and cut the Huskies lead to one. Morales led off the eighth with a double to leftcenter and scored on Tucker's sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Depreta-Johnson reached on an error to lead off the ninth and HBU had runners on the corners with one out when Otten's chopper up the third base line stayed fair. Senior third baseman Austin Zillweger tried a squeeze bunt to get the run home, but Depreta-Johnson was thrown out at the plate.

In the bottom of the inning, Chet Niehaus reached on an error to lead off the ninth and was able to advance to second on the play. He was thrown at third on a bunt by Ethan Valdez, who reached on the fielder's choice. Carter tried to pick Valdez off at first, but the thrown skipped by and allowed Valdez to go to third. Valdez then scored on a wild pitch to end the game.

The Huskies will be home for four straight, beginning with UTSA Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Husky Field.
