HOUSTON – Junior
Braxton Bonds recorded the first triple-double of his career and the first for a Husky since the 2008-09 season as he helped HBU to a 100-65 win over Barclay on Friday evening in Sharp Gym.
Bonds finished the night with a line of 16 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot with the assists marking a new career-best. The junior had just three assists at the half but dished up nine in the second half. The triple-double is the third in program history with Baron Sauls the last to accomplish the feat during the 2008-09 season.
Sophomore
Jalon Gates led all players in scoring with a career-high 23 on 6-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-11 from three and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. He's now shooting 91.7 percent (22-of-24) from the charity stripe for the season. Freshman
David Caraher added a double-double for the Huskies (4-7), adding 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
HBU also got career-highs of eight points from both
Chukuka Emili and
Philip McKenzie with both also setting new career-marks in rebounding, Emili grabbing eight boards and McKenzie seven.
Oliver Lynch-Daniels was 4-of-6 from the field to finish with nine points, joining
Will Gates Jr. and
Tim Myles with nine. Myles ended the night with four blocked shots for a new career-best and pulled down six rebounds.
Barclay (0-15) kept things close and held a 15-14 lead more than six minutes into the game but a 10-point run capped by a pair of Gates free throws gave the Huskies a 24-15 lead with 11:38 to go in the first half. HBU pushed its lead to double-digits and a Key Maloney layup got the Bears back to within nine with 2:15 to go in the period but the Huskies closed out the half on a 7-0 run to lead 46-30 at the intermission.
The Husky lead reached 20 on a Bonds layup at the 16:27 mark in the second half but Barclay was able to get back to within 14 when a Jeremy Orieh three made it 58-44 with 14:01 to go. From that point on, HBU was able to pull away using a 19-3 run over a four-minute stretch. The Huskies cruised the rest of the way with their lead getting as large as 40.
HBU out-rebounded the Bears by a 61-27 margin with the Huskies offensive rebounding total of 26 nearly matching Barclay's overall number. The Huskies finished the game shooting 44.6 percent (37-of-83) and scored 58 of their 100 points in the paint.
HBU hits the road for its final two non-conference matchups beginning with second-ranked Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. on Monday evening at 5:00 p.m. CST.
