WBB: Huskies Stifle Jarvis Christian, 78-30

Five Huskies score in double figures in the win against the Lady Bulldogs.

HOUSTON – HBU women's basketball takes down Jarvis Christian, 78-30, in non-conference women's basketball Wednesday night at Sharp Gym.

"I'm pleased that Megan and Shannon put up some points on the board tonight as we have been looking to them to score more recently," Coach Finnie says. "We didn't defend as hard as I would have liked and we still need to rebound harder, which is something we talk about everyday. To have as many turnovers is frustrating as a lot of them came from overprassing when we should have attacked the rim harder, but we will move forward and prepare for a tough UTEP team on Saturday."

Sophomore guards Sophie Taylor and Sydney Carr lead the scoring with 12 points each for the Huskies (2-3). Taylor shot 45.5 percent from the floor and shot 2-of-6 from the 3-point line, while Carr shot 36.3 percent from the field. Sophomore guard Shannon Jones scored 11 points and brought down eight rebounds. Freshmen guard Megan Valdez-Crader shot for a career-high 11 points, shooting 57.1 percent from the field and shot 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Sophomore forward Lauren Calver chipped in with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-5) were led by Keturah Taylor, who shot 33.3 percent from the floor racking in 11 points, while Equayla Smith put up eight points. Alexia Young and Monique Brown were the top rebounders each with four.

HBU shot 48.3 percent from the floor, compared to Jarvis Christian's 25.0 percent. The Huskies outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 45-24.

The Huskies led 17-4 at the end of the first, as part of a 28-4 run to open the game. Jones accounted for six of her 11 points to lead the Huskies to the advantage. HBU held Jarvis Christian to only a seven-point addition to its score in the second period, 38-11. Carr and junior guard Amanda Johnson were responsible for half the scoring in the second with six points by Carr and five points by Johnson.

HBU led by as many as 40 points, 58-18, in the third quarter, but a jumper by Johnson started a six point run for Jarvis Christian that was cut short thanks to a three-pointer by Taylor. The Huskies would end the third with a score of 67-26. HBU scored the first eight points in the fourth to increase their lead by 49 points, 75-26. The Huskies' defense would allow Jarvis Christian to score  only four points in the final period. Carr scored six of the 11 total points for the Huskies.

The Huskies will travel to El Paso, Texas to face non-conference foe UTEP Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m., before beginning a two game homestand against Paul Quinn on Wednesday, Dec. 6 and Huston-Tillotson Sunday, Dec. 10.
