TULSA, OKLAHOMA – A 13-point advantage going into the fourth quarter was enough to hold HBU women's basketball to a final score of 78-56 to Oral Roberts in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Mabee Center.
"We are not willing to do the things that win games," Coach Finnie says. "There is a lot of talk in the locker room and nodding of heads, but when it comes down to rebounding hard or getting to the rim and finishing plays, we have a lot of people who won't do it. I thought Amanda played hard today and it is showing in her numbers, as she consistently does what she is asked."
For the second time this season and the fourteenth time in her career, junior guard
Amanda Johnson scores in double figures and led the Huskies (1-3)  shooting 5-of-17 from the field with 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Lauren Calver posted nine points matching her season-high with two rebounds. Sophomore guard
Sophie Taylor racked in eight points and five rebounds, while sophomore guards
Britta Daub and
Sydney Carr each chipped in with five points.
Oral Roberts (2-3) scorers were led by Maya Mayberry with 17 points, Faith Ihim with 15 points and Maria Martianez, who posted a double-double for the Golden Eagles with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
HBU shot 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the field, while Oral Roberts shot 43.5 percent (27-62). The Huskies were outrebounded 50-31.
The Huskies were down early in the first quarter, but a five-point run with shots by Daub and Johnson gave HBU the lead, 5-9. With a 21-19 Husky lead going into the second quarter, a layup by Jones started a Golden Eagle 10-point run to give ORU its first lead, since the first quarter. Shots in the paint by Carr and junior center
Natalia Gwarda and a 3-pointer by
Sophie Taylor put HBU back within five points. ORU would only lead HBU by four going into the second half thanks to buckets by Daub and Johnson, 39-35.
A strong third quarter by the Golden Eagles would give a 13-point disadvantage to the Huskies trailing 58-45 at the start of the fourth quarter. The Huskies started off with back-to-back buckets by Calver, 60-48. Free-throws made by Johnson, Jones and Moore and a 3-pointer by Taylor would account for the Huskies final points, making the final score 78-56.
The Huskies return home to face Jarvis Christian Wednesday November 29 at 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym. They will then battle UTEP on the road Saturday Dec. 2 at 2:00 p.m. (CST).
