HOUSTON – HBU women's basketball drops 67-45 decision to crosstown rival Rice in HBU women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
"We have to be tougher," coach Finnie says. "We spotted them a 20-point lead early one and we couldn't't close that gap. I thought our defense was very solid in the second half. We forced several shot clock violations, but as in the first half, we couldn't't convert on the offensive end. Credit to Rice. They shot the ball extremely well and we couldn't't stop those runs. We have a lot to work on heading into the ORU game."
The Huskies (1-2) were led by sophomore guard
Sophie Taylor put up nine points, shooting 4-of-14 from the field. Sophomore guard
Shannon Jones had eight points and four rebounds and three assists, while junior guard
Amanda Johnson had seven points. Sophomore
Britta Daub and junior center
Veronika Kirienko each chipped in with six points.
Five Owls (3-0) scored in double-figures, led by Erica Ogwumike and Olivia Ogwumike with 13 points. Gabrielle Stanton had thirteen points, while Nicole Iademarco and Lauren Grigsby, who led the Owls with nine rebounds, each had 10 points.
HBU shot 32.2 percent from the field, 2-of-17 from the arc and 5-of-8 behind the line, while the Owls shot 37.9 percent from the field, 10-of-22 from the 3-point line and 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. Rice outrebounded HBU 36-41.
