HOUSTON – HBU fell behind in the 21
st minute and was unable to find the equalizer as the Huskies lost 1-0 to San Jose State on Sunday afternoon in Western Athletic Conference men's soccer action at Sorrels Field.
Sophomore
Dominick Faletto had the closest chance at scoring for the Huskies (5-6-0, 2-4-0 WAC), blasting a shot off the crossbar in the ninth minute. 12 minutes later, San Jose State's (3-9-1, 1-3-1 WAC) Carlos Valdovinos got behind the defense off a Jonathan Partida pass and managed to beat
Harrison Veith who came out to challenge him, sneaking it past him and into the goal. The Spartans put two more shots on goal in the first half but Veith made saves on both.
In the second half, the San Jose State defense remained up to the task as the Spartans allowed seven Husky shots but none of them were on target.
Dequan Thomas, in the 51
st minute, had a look with a header that went just high over the crossbar for HBU. Veith had to make one more save in the second half, stopping an attempt by Eduardo Buenfil at the 82:40 mark.
The Spartans held a 20-13 advantage in shots on the day and put four on goal. Corner kicks were 2-to-1 in HBU's favor. Veith made three saves in taking the loss in goal, falling to 4-2-0 on the season, while David Heredia improved to 1-3-1 for SJSU.
"I thought we started the game really well. We came out and hit the post early and were really all over them the first 15 minutes, then the momentum started to swing a little bit," said head coach
Ryan Pratt. "We stopped playing aggressively and became a little more passive and San Jose State took advantage of us and had the momentum the last part of the first half. In the locker room, we talked about focusing our energy, effort and intensity to become more urgent, and we did that. The reality is, though, you can't play 60 minutes of a soccer game. You have the play the whole 90, and we didn't do that today."
HBU hits the road for its final road trip of the season starting on Thursday, Oct. 19, when the Huskies visit Utah Valley in Orem, Utah before continuing on to face Seattle on Sunday, Oct. 22, in Seattle, Wash.
