WSOC: Quick Start Gives SFA 4-2 Victory Over Huskies

Gabby Rodriguez scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season.

HOUSTON – Early start and a high scoring first half made the difference for SFA to defeat the Huskies 4-2 in the second weekend of conference play Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.

"We played hard this weekend but we just gave up too many goals," head coach Misty Jones said. "We had moments where we looked brilliant and then moments where we weren't our best. The Southland is an extremely competitive conference and we know that we have to put together a full 90 in order to finish at the top."

The first six minutes of the match the Huskies (3-6-1, 1-1-1 SLC) found themselves down by two goals. Both goals came from SFA's (6-2-0, 3-0-0 SLC) Hanna Barker from crosses from the right side of the field and finished in the bottom right of the goal. The first assist came from Madison Hall and the second from Amanda Doyle. Breanna Moore added to SFA's led making it 3-0 in the 27th minute from the assistance from Hanna Barker. Sophomore forward Gabby Rodriguez put the Huskies on the board from a flicked ball from senior midfielder Allison Abendschein and used her body to get it past the goal line.

A 3-1 lead wasn't enough for Hanna Barker as she completed her hat trick in the 47th minute. As the Huskies continued to fight, Gabby Rodriguez found the back of the net after a ball from sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer. Rodriguez struck to ball from the left side of the field and connected to the right upper 90 to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the 65th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Turner recorded the loss after being forced to make three saves with four goals against. Lillie Ehlert took home the win after making four saves and having two goals against.

The Huskies will go on the road next weekend first to Hammond, Louisiana to take on Southeastern Louisiana on Friday at 7 p.m. and will travel to Thibodaux, Louisiana to take on Nicholls on Sunday at 1 p.m.
