WSOC: Rice Stuns HBU With Late Tally, 2-1

Allison Abendschein scores for Huskies.

HOUSTON – HBU quickly answered Rice's opening goal, but the Owls came through with the game-winner in the 86th minute for a 2-1 victory over the Huskies in non-conference women's soccer Friday night at Holloway Field.

"The girls played a very solid and complete game tonight," HBU head coach Misty Jones said. "We had a few starters out, so I was more than pleased at how the team responded to being in different positions and having to gut it out for an entire 90 minutes. It's tough to not get the result we wanted, but the game could have gone either way. Allison broke into the box with just seconds left in the game and made the keeper make a difficult save to keep us from tying the game again. It's great to see how the girls responded after a tough road trip last weekend.

Senior midfielder Allison Abendschein scored HBU's goal to tie the game, 1-1, the 66th minute, making a steal and taking it through the middle for the unassisted finish. Abendschein took three of the six shots for HBU (0-3-0), with all of them being on goal. Junior midfielder Ellee Hall, senior defender Elizabeth Adams and junior midfielder Charlotte Vancura each took a shot. Junior goalkeeper Katie Turner made five saves.

M.C. Danilevics scored the go-ahead goal with just over four minutes left in the match on an assist from Jenny Fichera after a corner kick. The game was scoreless at halftime, but Aliza Wolfe scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Lianne Mananquil in the 61st minute. Maya Hoyer played 69:16 and allowed one goal with no saves, while Samantha Colley played the final 20:44 and made a pair of saves.

Rice outshot HBU, 17-6, with seven on goal to the Huskies' three. The Owls held a huge advantage on corner kicks, 11-1.

The Huskies will return to action this weekend for their home opener against UTSA Sunday at 5 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
