WSOC: Huskies Blank UTSA in Home Opener, 2-0

Sophomore GK Alanis Guevara records clean sheet in Huskies’ home opener.

HOUSTON – HBU did not have many opportunities, but both of their shots on goal found the net in a 2-0 victory over UTSA in the Huskies' home opener Sunday night at Sorrels Field.

"It was great to get the win at home," head coach Misty Jones said. "I was proud that we put together a complete weekend. We played really well Friday night and it was nice to play well enough to win today. The girls have been working really hard and I am pleased they were rewarded with a win. Alanis had a solid game in goal to preserve our first shutout of the season."

Junior midfielder Ellee Hall scored her second goal of the season in the 10th minute on an assist from sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer. Hall led the Huskies (1-3-0) with a pair of shots. Senior midfielder Allison Abendschein added her second goal of the year for insurance in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Alanis Guevara turned in HBU's first clean sheet of the season and the second solo shutout of her career by making four saves.

"The positivity of our team has changed a lot since last weekend, because we had been pointing fingers at each other, but we were more supportive of each other and knew we could play better," Hall said. "Since moving to midfield, I like it better, because I get on the ball more and I can feed the ball to my teammates better. That's the difference already from last year to this year is we've been able to get our chances and finish them. We just need to work on the build up more."

Jordyn Lacy took two shots for UTSA (2-1-0), both of which were on goal, while Kaja Skare also took a pair of chances. Eight other Roadrunners tooks shots, with one of them on goal. Goalkeeper Isabella Sanchez gave up a goal in the first half, while Michelle Cole played the second have and gave up a goal as well as neither keeper made a save.

Hall took the feed from Spencer in a crowded box, but won the ball and finished with a strike to the bottom right in the 10th minute. In the second half, Abendschein made a steal 30 yards out had a one-on-one with the goalie and beat Cole to the right side in the 77th minute. The Huskies nearly put the game out of reach in the 85th minute when Morgan Dean's header found the back of the net, but HBU was whistled for offside.

UTSA's best opportunity for an equalizer came in the 65th minute when Lacy had an open look from 20 yards out that was heading just below the crossbar, before Guevara made a leaping punch to save it over the goal.

The Roadrunners outshot the Huskies, 12-7, and had 11 corner kicks to HBU's one.

HBU will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a pair of matches next weekend, first playing Oral Roberts Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Tulsa Sunday at 1 p.m.
