LARAMIE, Wyoming – Wyoming scored two goals, both in the second half to defeat HBU, 2-0, in the season opener Friday at Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
"Tonight we struggled to find any rhythm. We were on our heels for most of the game and found ourselves defending more than we would have preferred. It's possible that the altitude and the unseasonably cold weather might have played a role, but we need to be able to overcome those kinds of obstacles. On a bright note, Katie had a fantastic night in goal," mentioned HBU head coach
Misty Jones.
Junior goalkeeper
Katie Turner made a total of nine saves during the game, including one shot to the lower right corner by Wyoming's Laurel Ramer. Senior midfielder
Allison Abendschein had two scoring opportunities in the second half during the final moments of the match.
Abendschein's second attempt in the final minute of the game was saved by Cowgirls goalie Georgia Rowntree.
In the second half, Charlotte Hume scored the first goal for the Cowgirls, then Ramer added the other goal shortly after. Mandy Meyer and Jessie Gentle both recorded an assist.
Wyoming tallied two goals in the 50
th and 60
th minute, respectively. Meyer passed to Hume for a goal to the left of Turner, followed by a shot by Ramer with the assist by Gentle. Both opportunities came off of low crosses from the right side back in front of the net.
Jones added, "It was good to be able to get everyone into the game and allow them to get some experience early in the season. Fortunately, the season is a marathon and not a sprint. We are just getting started. We will all be better on Sunday."
The Huskies will continue their road swing, facing Idaho State Sunday in Pocatello at 2 p.m., before returning to Houston for a match at Rice Friday at 7 p.m.
