HOUSTON, Texas – The HBU women's soccer team kicks off the 2016 season on the road, traveling to Wyoming Friday in Laramie at 6 p.m. CDT, followed by Idaho State Sunday in Pocatello at 2 p.m. CDT.
The Huskies, picked fourth and fifth among the Southland Conference coaches and SID preseason polls, respectively, will pose a threat with 19 returning letterwinners, along with nine starters. HBU sophomore forward
Sabriah Spencer was a first-team selection, while senior defenders
Kristi O'Brien and
Elizabeth Adams and senior midfielder
Allison Abendschein were named second team on the Southland Conference preseason soccer teams.
Spencer had an outstanding rookie campaign last year as she led the Huskies to a second-place finish in the SLC (8-3-0), recording a total of 21 points (9 goals, 3 assists) on 42 shot attempts for the 2015 season. Team captain O'Brien led the Huskies back line of defense, which allowed only 1.24 goals per game. Adams started in 17 matches, tallied one goal and two assists her junior year. Abendschein aggressively took 38 shots, 18 that were on goal, and accumulated three goals, ranking third on the team.
Wyoming will be returning 11 starters from last year's squad that went 10-6-4 overall and placed fourth on the Mountain West Preseason coaches poll. Shania Ashouri led the Cowgirls with nine goals and seven assists for the 2015 season. The Idaho State Bengals went 1-17-1 last year, but have nine freshmen on this year's roster.
The Huskies will return to Houston for their next match at Rice Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m., followed by their first home game of the season against UTSA Sunday, Aug 28 at 5 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
