Matthew McCollough turned in another quality start as the Huskies took three-out-of-four from Utah with a 4-1 victory in the series finale Sunday at Husky Field.
McCollough (2-0) allowed one unearned run on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 7.2 innings, while Senior righthander
Dylan Zarosky recorded his third save of the season by getting the final four outs. Zarosky moved into a tie for second place on HBU's all-time saves list with 12, three behind leader J.D. Sellers.
Senior second baseman
Greg Espinosa went 3-for-4 with a double and a run and had reached base safely in eight-straight plate appearances before grounding out in his final at-bat. Senior first baseman
Andrew Alvarez and senior third baseman
Justin Monsour each went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Senior designated hitter
Austin Saenz doubled and scored a run, while senior shortstop
Louie Payetta doubled and drove in run for the Huskies (8-5).
Josh Lapiana (0-2) took the loss for the Utes (3-9), allowing four runs, two earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts in seven innings.
Wylee Smith went 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Kody Davis went 3-for-5 and Hunter Simmons went 2-for-4 for Utah.
Espinosa led off the bottom of the first with a single, then scored the game's first run on Payetta's RBI double to leftcenter. Smith and Simmons put together back-to-back singles with one out in the fourth, then Zack Moeller hit a ground ball to third. The Huskies got the force out at second, but the throw to first skipped past Alvarez and allowed Utah to score on Espinosa's throwing error.
Monsour singled to lead off the fifth, then junior centerfielder
Joe Van Marter reached on a bunt single. Espinosa also dropped down a bunt single and a throwing error on the third baseman allowed Monsour to score the go-ahead run.
Saenz led off the sixth with a double off the leftfield wall, then Alvarez reachd on a bunt single. Junior leftfielder
Christian Thames plated Saenz with a safety squeeze, then Alvarez scored when Monsour hit a slow chopper to short for an infield single, but the throw to first sailed wide, putting the Huskies ahead, 4-1.
The Huskies finish off a five-game homestand against Texas Southern Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Husky Field, before playing 11-straight on the road. Tuesday's Legacy Sports Network broadcast and live video stream with
