HOUSTON - HBU and Saint Peter's went in to halftime tied 22-22 but a big second half, highlighted by a 16-point run, proved the difference as the Huskies men's basketball team stayed undefeated at home with a 62-47 victory on Wednesday evening in Sharp Gym.
A very even first half saw the Peacocks (4-4) jump out to an early 10-2 lead but the Huskies (3-4) pulled back to within one with 7:52 to go in the half after a pair of baskets by junior center
Josh Ibarra. A 10-point, five-rebound effort in the half from Ibarra helped HBU bounce back and go into the locker room at the half even with Saint Peter's. Both teams were 9-27 from the floor in the first stanza.
In the early going of the second half, the score stayed close and the Peacocks led 32-30 4:38 into the half. Over the next eight minutes the Huskies out-scored SPU 16-0 with senior
Reveal Chukwujekwu providing nine points during the run. The Peacocks answered with the next seven points to make the score 46-39 but a three-pointer from
Colter Lasher got the Huskies going again and they led by double-digits the rest of the game, pushing the lead as high as 19.
The Huskies were led by Ibarra who finished with season-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. The big man was 6-9 from the floor and pulled down four offensive boards. Chukwujekwu, with his nine points in an eight minute stretch, finished with 13 and seven and was also 6-9 shooting the ball.
Lasher contributed seven and seven, knocked down one trey to bring himself within one of the top-10 all-time three-pointers made list at HBU.
Asa Cantwell and
Alex Fountain both had seven points in the win and
Braxton Bonds added six.
HBU held a 41-26 advantage on the boards, holding Saint Peter's to just seven rebounds in the second half, and added 13 on the offensive end. The Huskies shot 43.1 percent from the floor and held the Peacocks to just 34 percent.
The Huskies return to action this Saturday with a visit to ninth-ranked Indiana in Bloomington, Ind. with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. CST.
