HOUSTON – HBU closes out its first homestand of the 2016-17 season against Ecclesia College this Tuesday in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m. Fans can catch all the action with Lonnie King providing play-by-play on the Legacy Sports Network audio broadcast at HBUHuskies.com.
The Huskies (1-2) will be hosting the Royals (4-6) for the third year in a row and sixth time overall. HBU holds a 5-0 all-time advantage with the last two meetings ending in scores of 98-47 and 101-47. Last year, HBU out-shot Ecclesia 54.4 percent to 26 percent from the floor and held a 54-22 advantage on the boards.
Fresh off a 98-54 victory over Dallas Christian, the Huskies look to even their season record at 2-2. Through three games, senior
Colter Lasher is leading the team with 13.3 points, four assists and 1.67 steals per game.
Atif Russell is the other Husky averaging double-digits scoring per game with an 11 point average. Eight different players are currently averaging at least 7.3 points per contest. As a team, HBU is shooting 43.1 percent from the floor and out-rebounding opponents by 4.3 boards per game.
Austin Burroughs has been the top performer on the offensive end for the Royals, averaging 17.6 points per game and connecting on 45 percent from three-point range. Dequcelan Bagsby and David Gaut, Jr. aren't far behind Burroughs, though, posting scoring averages of 15.7 and 14.3, respectively. Gaut, Jr. is the Royals leader with 7.1 rebounds and four assists per game. Ecclesia plays across town at St. Thomas on Monday evening, the night before they face HBU.
In last season's contest between the two teams, junior
Josh Ibarra posted a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Lasher finished with 15 points and fellow senior
Reveal Chukwujekwu added 11.
HBU hits the road for its next game on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisc. against Big East member Marquette. That game will mark the second time the two teams have met. After that, the Huskies return home to Houston for a game against crosstown rival Rice at Tudor Fieldhouse on Rice's campus on Nov. 30.
