HOUSTON - The HBU men's basketball team opened the home portion of the 2016-17 schedule with its first win of the season with a 98-54 win over Dallas Christian thanks to 14 different players netting points on Friday night at Sharp Gym.
The Crusaders (0-9) got on the board first but HBU (1-2) quickly took a 4-2 lead and never looked back, racing out to a 13-2 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. Dallas Christian managed to cut the Huskies lead to nine after an Anthony McQuary three-pointer with 6:07 left in the half but HBU responded by pushing its lead 39-19 at the half.
The Huskies came out with a 21-6 run to open the second half, capped by a
Colter Lasher layup with 14:59 to go, giving HBU a 35 point lead. Dallas Christian managed to cut their deficit to 29 on a Josh Walls jumper at the 8:29 mark but a
Kyren Block free throw pushed the Huskies lead to 30+ for good. HBU out-scored the Crusaders 59-35 in the second half.
Senior
Reveal Chukwujekwu finished with a game-high 15 points on 5-8 shooting and came up one rebound shy of a double-double, totaling nine boards. Lasher added a solid all-around night with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while
Alex Fountain pitched in nine points, five boards, three assists and a pair of steals off the bench. Block, in his collegiate debut, came up just shy of a double-double with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds in just 10 minutes of action.
Walls scored nine points on 4-5 shooting to lead the Crusaders with Hunter Bennett pitching in eight. Dallas Christian shot just 27.8 percent from the floor and 14.3 percent from three. The Huskies forced 15 Crusader turnovers in the win.
HBU came within three of the program record for rebounds with 70 boards, 28 of which came on the offensive end and helped lead to 25 second-chance points. The Huskies knocked down 47.4 percent of their shots from the field and enjoyed a 58-26 advantage in points in the paint.
The Huskies remain at home for their next game on Tuesday, November 22 as they host Ecclesia College in Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m.
