WSOC: McNeese Slips past Huskies, 2-1, in OT

Allison Abendschein scores her fifth goal of the season.

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana – A late equalizer for HBU soccer was enough to force overtime, but McNeese scored the golden goal in the 95th minute as it took the match, 2-1, in the Southland Conference matchup, Friday night at Cowgirl Field.

"Second game in a row that we have dominated the second half and not put the team away," head coach Misty Jones commented. "We are in a must-win situation to have a chance at the tournament. I have said all along that this is a special group of girls. I have every confidence that they will find a way to win."

Going into the second half scoreless, the Huskies (5-10-1, 3-5-1 SLC) were determined to stay on their offensive half. Junior defender Casey Basso took advantage of a Cowgirl (8-8-0, 4-5-0 SLC) clearance off of a Husky corner and hit the upper 90 crossbar in the 54th minute of the match. In the 67th minute, the Cowgirls counter attacked and won a corner as a Husky defender blocked a cross. Bettina Brulhart saw the short corner was an option, so she played Emily Silva who served the ball to the far post in the six yard box. Kayla Goedicke was able to get away from her defender and used her head to get it past sophomore goalkeeper Alanis Guevara. In the 85th minute a Cowgirl defender took down senior midfielder Allison Abendschein in the 18 yard box, resulting in a penalty kick. Abendschein made the keeper guess the wrong way, as she buried it to the right of the keeper to force the game into overtime.

Five minutes into overtime, Savannah Laricci pressured a Husky defender and blocked her clearance. Laricci was able to control it and beat two defenders as she slipped it past Guevara for the game winning goal.

The Huskies had Abendschein, sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer, and sophomore forward Jessa LeBlanc each with one shot on goal. Guevara took home the loss as she made three saves and had two goals against.

Goedicke led the Cowgirls offensively with three shots on goal. Annie Bravenec recorded the win as she had two saves and one goal against on the night.

The Huskies will travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar, Sunday at 1 p.m. and will go to Corpus Christi, Texas for their final regular season conference match, against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, Friday at 7:30 p.m.
