WSOC: HBU Dominates Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-1

Kristi O’Brien scores a pair of goals to tally her second and third of the season.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - HBU secured the No. 4 seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament with a resounding 4-1 victory over Texas A&M- Corpus Chisti in the regular-season finale Friday night at Jack Dugan Soccer Stadium.

"I am very proud of the girls for their performance in such an important game," head coach Misty Jones said. "We prepared all week and it was great to see their hard work pay off."

The attack started quickly for the Huskies (7-10-1, 5-5-1 SLC) as junior midfielder Ellee Hall forced the Islanders' (3-14-1, 3-7-1 SLC) keeper to make a save resulting in a corner kick. Hall served the ball into the box and found senior forward Morgan Dean's head, but the ball deflected off of the post in the fourth minute of the match. In the 17th minute, junior defender Casey Basso dribbled to the endline and slipped the ball to senior midfielder Allison Abendschein who found the back of the net from the top of the six yard box.

Twelve minutes later, the Huskies were rewarded with a free-kick from 35 yards out. Senior defender Kristi O'Brien served the ball in and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi goalkeeper overestimated the ball, resulting in a 2-0 lead for HBU. Two minutes later and the free kick five yards farther away, history repeated itself as O'Brien tricked the keeper again and the Huskies found a 3-0 lead.

In the 38th minute, Yvette Franco passed the ball to Madeleine Lozano who finished the ball from 30 yards out to chip sophomore goalkeeper Alanis Guevara and shortened the deficit to 3-1. Hall finished the scoring for the Huskies as she found the back of the net from an assist by sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer in the 68th minute of the match.

HBU was led offensively by Hall with three shots on goal and was helped by Abendschein and O'Brien, each tallying two shots on goal. Spencer and senior forward Alessia Dal Monte finished off the last shots on goal for the Huskies as they each recorded one. Guevara earned the win in the net, making four saves with one goal against.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had a total of five shots on goal, which was produced by Franco, Lozano, Meghan Cordero, Emma Biba, and Brooke Erdmann. The Islanders had two goalkeepers for the night with Jordan Wainwright seeing most of the action in the 78 minutes played, as she made five saves with four goals against. Kendall Moody went into the game for the final 12 minutes of the first half, but was not forced to make a save.

The Huskies outshot the Islanders, 13-12, and led the stats on corner kicks, 7-1. The Islanders had more saves as they recorded five as opposed to the Huskies four.

Jones continued, "Now the real work begins at the conference tournament where, as we know, anything can happen."

The Huskies enter the Southland Conference tournament as the fourth seed and will be matched up with the fifth seed, Southeastern Louisiana, in Corpus Christi. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday on the artificial turf at Jack Dugan Soccer Stadium.
