WSOC: Huskies Fall Short Against NW State, 2-1

Ellee Hall scored her third goal of the season.

HOUSTON – HBU could not take advantage of numerous offensive opportunities, while Northwestern State capitalized and came away with a 2-1 victory over the Huskies in Southland Conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.

"We definitely didn't get the result we wanted today," head coach Misty Jones said. "We gave up two soft goals and we created way too many chances to have not scored more than one. Fortunately, this team is made of players with heart and character. We will bounce back and will take care of business next weekend."

In the 15th minute of the match Alex Latham was forced to make a double save as she stopped the original shot from junior midfielder Ellee Hall and the followed up shot from sophomore forward Sabriah Spencer to keep the Huskies (5-9-1, 3-4-1 SLC) shutout. One minute later, senior defender Elizabeth Adams cleared the ball off the line from Sage Leffew's header to the left corner of the goal. Both teams also had great offensive patterns but couldn't get the last pass or touch before the defense snatched it away. The Huskies outshot the Lady Demons (9-6-0, 6-2-0 SLC) 11-4 in the first half and put five of those shots on frame.

In the first two minutes in the second half, the Lady Demons were the first to find the back of the net, as April Trowbridge crossed the ball in from the right side and Camila Ardila ran past her defender to finish it on her second touch. In the 53rd minute, sophomore goalkeeper Alanis Guevara made a picture perfect save as she drop stepped to tip the ball over the cross bar to save the Lady Demons from scoring again. Twelve minutes later, Northwestern State's Cache Haley dribbled the ball down the left line from half field and fed a through ball to Esdeina Gonzalez. She finished it in the bottom left part of the goal to add to their lead. The Huskies answered in the 78th minute from Spencer's header to Hall's foot who curved it past the keeper as she placed it in the left side netting. Guevara came up big again with a save two minutes later to keep the game close, but unfortunately the Huskies could not produce the equalizer before time ran out.

Hall had four of her five shots on target, while senior midfielder Allison Abendschein helped offensively as she had three shots on goal. Guevara had three saves for the afternoon with two goals against and the team produced one save.

The Lady Demons had Esdeina Gonzalez to lead offensively with two shots on goal. Latham took home the win as she tallied ten saves with one goal against.

The Huskies outshot the Lady Demons, 25-10, led in corner kicks, 7-5, but Northwestern State led the stats in saves, 10-4.

The Huskies will travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana, for a Southland Conference matchup with McNeese on Friday, at 7 p.m., then will be in Beaumont, Texas, for another league matchup with Lamar on Sunday, at 1 p.m.
