BSB: Moon’s Contract Extended Through 2019

HBU head baseball coach is entering 11th season this year.

HOUSTON – HBU extended the contract of head baseball coach Jared Moon for three more years, through the 2019 season, Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci announced Monday.

"Jared led his team to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA postseason appearance is only its second season in the league in 2015," Moniaci said. "The baseball program has won two conference championships over the past three seasons and has consistently competed at the highest level under Jared's leadership."

Moon is entering his entering his 11th season at HBU and is nearing 300 career victories and becoming the program's all-time winningest coach. The Huskies won the 2015 Southland Conference Tournament Championship, behind an NCAA record four consecutive complete game performances by their starting pitchers, then competed in the NCAA Regional in Houston.

"I appreciate the administration and its commitment to us and what we are trying to achieve in our program," Moon said. "Coming off the year we had, we are looking forward to continued success and building on what we've done the last three years."

Moon won two conference titles and made an NAIA World Series appearance before HBU transitioned to Division I, where it has won two conference tournament titles. Since he has been head coach, 10 student-athletes have gone on to play professional baseball, including Zach Nehrir, who became the highest MLB draft pick in HBU history following last season.

"I'm always grateful for the opportunity to stay at my alma mater," Moon said. "I've been here a long time, there are some milestones I would like us to reach and I think this extension will help us reach those goals."

Moon's extension was announced along with six other head coaches -- Ron Cottrell (men's basketball), Mary-Ellen Hall (softball), Misty Jones (women's soccer), Steve Jones (men's soccer), Theresa Fuqua (track & field/cross country) and David Shuster (men's and women's golf). The other three head coaches – Vic Shealy (football), Donna Finnie (women's basketball) and Trent Herman (volleyball/beach volleyball) – each received extensions last year.

Specific terms of coaches' contracts at HBU are not made available for public record.
