VB: Huskies Drops Two to Close Lumberjack Classic

Melissa Fuchs records career-high 18 kills in LMU loss.



FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The HBU volleyball team fell twice on Saturday, dropping a 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 8-15) decision to Loyola Marymount and 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 16-25, 14-25) match to Liberty inside Rolle Activity Center to close the Lumberjack Classic.
 
Junior setter Kayla Armer was named to the all-tournament team for the Huskies (4-3), averaging 8.42 assists over 12 sets.
 
Junior outside hitter Melissa Fuchs recorded a career-high 18 kills against LMU (3-1). The native of Provo, Utah, was one of two HBU players to turn in a double-figure kill performance, joined by fellow junior outside Jessica Wooten, who notched her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs.
 
Armer recorded a season-high 39 assists, along with eight digs. Sophomore libero Hailey Erickson captained the back row with 13 digs, while senior middle blocker Allison Doerpinghaus recorded a season-best seven block assists. The Huskies recorded 11 blocks total.
 
Fuchs led all players with six kills each across the first two sets, as HBU claimed 25-21 and 25-22 victories to take a 2-0 lead, outhitting the Lions .296-.229 and .364-.189. However, LMU's squad rallied to take consecutive 25-23 edges in the third and fourth set, before taking the match 15-8 in the fifth and deciding set.
 
Wooten recorded her third double-double of the season and second of the day with 15 digs and 15 kills, both season-highs, against Liberty (4-2).
 
Both teams traded the lead 12 times in the opening set before the Huskies pulled out a 25-23 victory.
 
The Lady Flames turned in .462, .414 and .321 clips over the next three sets to claim the match 3-1.
 
HBU will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 8, hosting Prairie View A&M in a 7 p.m. match.
