MSOC: Hartwick Scores Late in OT to Subdue HBU, 3-2

Senior Thilo Borgmann, freshman Darrell Johnson score for Huskies

SPOKANE, Wash. – Freshman Darrell Johnson's first collegiate goal knotted the match at 2-all and sent the game into overtime, but Hartwick's Jamie O'Grady scored with 11 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Hawks a 3-2 victory over HBU Sunday evening on the final day of the Gonzaga Invitational.

"We had plenty of chances and created a lot of opportunities; we just couldn't convert," said HBU head coach Steve Jones. "We're outshooting every team. We have to do a better job of closing out. The boys fought hard all day. We had some guys who had some solid games tonight. We have two more games to prepare for conference play."

Marcelo Acuna took a team-high four shots, while all three of George Kelley's shots hit the target for HBU (3-3-0). Acuna and Sebastian Henke had two shots on goal apiece. Philip Poser started the match and made one save while allowing one goal. Chance Pope took the loss as he played the final 65 minutes of the match and allowed two goals while stopping a career high four shots.

O'Grady had a two-goal match to lead Hartwick (3-1-2), as he led the Hawks with four goals and three shots on goal. Nick Hills had a pair of shots on goal. Lenny Wilson earned the complete-game win in goal as he stopped nine shots and allowed two goals.

Hartwick took a 1-0 lead as O'Grady scored on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Bryan Brody nearly tied the match midway through the half, coming off a corner, but Wilson made the save and the teams entered the locker rooms with the Hawks maintaining the 1-0 advantage.

HBU outshot the Hawks, 7-3, in the opening half and 5-1 in shots on goal. Each team had two corner kicks.

Borgmann tied the match 11 minutes into the second half, assisted by Erick Aragon. Aragon sent an upfield pass to Borgmann on the left side of the field. Borgmann beat his defender and shot the ball under the arm of a diving Wilson.

The Hawks came right back, as Wyatt Scott scored a minute later, as he won the challenge for the ball between he and Pope and scored into an open net.

Moments after Pope saved a header attempt by O'Grady, Johnson and Dominick Faletto tied the match at 2-2. Faletto's initial shot was saved by Wilson, but the rebound went right to Johnson, whose shot hit just under the cross bar to knot things up with 23 minutes left in regulation.

Borgmann came inches close to giving HBU the lead three minutes later, as his shot attempt went on the wrong side of the post.

With under a minute left in the second overtime, Marc Berry sent a centering pass that Pope jumped up to clear. The ball found the foot of O'Grady, who was left undefended in front of the goal and he scored to give the Hawks the double-OT victory.

HBU outshot Hartwick, 10-6, while the Hawks had a 3-2 advantage in the overtime periods, giving HBU a 19-12 shot advantage for the match. The Huskies doubled up Hartwick, 6-3, in corner kicks.

HBU plays two more non-conference matches – at SMU Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 pm and home versus Central Arkansas Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 pm – before opening conference play on the road at UNLV and Grand Canyon Oct. 2-4.
