MSOC: Big Half Gives SMU 3-1 Victory Over Huskies

Freshman midfielder Erick Aragon scores his first-collegiate goal

DALLAS – Freshman midfielder Erick Aragon netted his first-collegiate goal, but SMU scored all three of its goals in the first half in a 3-1 victory over HBU men's soccer Thursday evening from Westcott Field.

"Tonight was a rough night," said HBU head coach Steve Jones. "In the first half, we struggled to defend and gave them too much space. We were glad to see the effort in the second half. We just need to find a way to have two consistent halves."

Dominick Faletto paced HBU (3-4-0) with two shots, while Aragon and Kameron Maney had a shot on goal apiece. Philip Poser took the loss in goal as he stopped a season-high five shots. Chance Pope played the second half and matched his career high of four saves.

Five different players had three shots to lead SMU (3-2-2). Idrissa Camera took a game-high three shots on goal. Michael Nelson stopped one shot between the pipes in the winning effort.

The Mustangs wasted little time taking a lead, as Brenden Lee scored eight minutes into the match. Mauro Chicero threw the ball back into play, the ball found Jared Rice, who sent a centering pass that Lee dove and headed past Poser for a 1-0 SMU lead.

In the 20th minute, Stanton Garcia's shot hit the post, nearly giving SMU a 2-0 advantage.

The Mustangs took control late in the first half with a pair of goals in a two-minute span. Emil Cuello gave SMU a 2-0 lead with a 20-yard strike in the 41st minute, followed by a header goal by Camera in the 43rd minute.

In the 88th minute, Aragon scored on a deflection off the goalkeeper, assisted by Faletto.

HBU hosts Central Arkansas Sunday at 1 pm from Sorrels Field.
