Live StreamCORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The HBU volleyball will look to keep momentum on their side when they visit Southland Conference leader Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Tuesday in a 6:30 p.m. first serve.
The Huskies (15-12, 7-5 SLC) swept their homestand this past week, downing Texas Southern, Sam Houston State and Lamar. HBU handled TSU in straight sets on Tuesday to close non-conference play with an 8-7 mark, before picking up 3-0 and 3-2 victories over SHSU and Lamar to move into a tie with Abilene Christian for fourth place in the SLC standings with a 7-5 record. ACU, still in transition to NCAA Division I status, is ineligible for the conference tournament.
On the season, junior outside hitter
Jessica Wooten is tied for 19th in the nation (third in the conference) with 40 service aces and 39th overall (third in the conference) with an average of 0.40 aces per set. The native of Humble, Texas, also ranks sixth in the league with 3.24 kills per set and second on the team with 2.79 digs per set. Junior libero
Melissa Fuchs leads the back row with 2.95 digs per set.
Against the Bearkats on Thursday, Wooten recorded 10 kills to pass Jamie Sebesta (1,008, 2004-07) for eighth all-time at HBU. She followed with 19 kills against Lamar on Saturday, giving her 1,028 total for her career.
Junior setter
Kayla Armer ranks third in the conference with an average of 9.94 assists per set. Senior middle blocker
Allison Doerpinghaus ranks fifth in the conference with a .331 hitting percentage, while, defensively, her and sophomore middle blocker
Blair Gillard rank third and fifth in blocks, averaging 1.06 and 1.00 per set, respectfully.
As a team, HBU is third in the Southland in blocks (2.18 per set) and fourth in both hitting percentage (.209) and opponent hitting percentage (.194).
The Islanders are the only remaining unbeaten team in the conference, entering Tuesday with perfect 12-0 record. At 24-4 overall on the season, TAMU-CC ranks fourth in the country in opponent hitting percentage (.140) and seventh in digs (17.54 per set). The Islanders also lead the league in kills (13.35 per set), hitting percentage (.236) and assists (12.54 per set).
TAMU-CC have several Islanders who are an attribute to their success. Sophomore libero Kate Klepetka, the reigning SLC Defensive Player of the Week, ranks second in the nation with 6.10 digs per set and ninth with 537 total digs. Sophomore setter Kristyn Nicholson leads the SLC in assists (10.77 per set) and ranks seventh with 0.35 service aces per set. Middle blockers Brittany Gilpin (.372) and Madeline Doud (.308) rank second and seventh in the conference in hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Ivy Baresh ranks fourth in kills (3.30 per set).
Following Tuesday's match, the Huskies will return to Sharp Gym for their home finale on Thursday. HBU will host Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. for Senior Night with Doerpinghaus being recognized prior to first serve.
