Anthony Odunsi and sophomore
Josh Ibarra both recorded double-doubles, as the HBU men's basketball team thumped Crowley's Ridge, 102-62, in their home opener on Monday night inside Sharp Gym.
Odunsi finished with a season-high 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting with a hit from three-point land, along with a career-best 10 assists. The double-figure assist performance for the native of Sugar Land, Texas, marks the first 10-dime game for the Huskies (1-1) since Michael Moss did so against North Texas on Feb. 15, 2010.
Ibarra also posted season-bests against the Pioneers (2-3), recording 11 rebounds, with six coming on the defensive end, and 10 points on a 5-of-7 showing from the floor.
In total, six HBU players scored in double-figures, as Ibarra and Odunsi were joined by
Colter Lasher (17),
Asa Cantwell (13),
Trey Patterson (12) and
Reveal Chukwujekwu (11) in eclipsing the mark. The Huskies last placed six in double-digits in a 123-43 win on Jan. 12, 2012, also coming against CRC. HBU last surpassed 100 points in a 107-55 win over Arlington Baptist on Feb. 25, 2014.
Both teams traded points in the early going before the Huskies caught fire. Up 17-15 with 12:35 to go in the half, HBU scored eight points over the next minute of play as part of a 20-2 run to coast to a 52-30 advantage at the break. Both teams nearly repeated the same offensive production in the second half, as the Huskies outscored the Pioneers 50-32 en route to the 102-62 final.
Freshmen
Evan Anderson,
Isaiah Robinson and
Nic Thomas made their collegiate debuts against CRC. Robinson totaled four points, three blocks and three rebounds, while Anderson finished with a bucket and two boards.
Thomas recorded one assist and one rebound. HBU will now begin its participation in the Cancun Challenge. The Huskies will make visits to fellow tournament participants TCU (Nov. 19) and Illinois State (Nov. 21) in non-bracketed play, before playing South Dakota State and either Cleveland State or Rider at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya across November 24-25.
