"We knew coming in Lamar was an extremely explosive offense and they had the ability – I thought our defense, outside some of the explosive plays that happened in the passing game, did a lot of good things today," HBU head coach
Vic Shealy said. "We'll go back and look at the tape, but I think we'll find some things that are consistently happening, where we don't make some mistakes mentally, that physically we are closing the gap and are able to play."
Kade Harrington, the nation's leading rusher, ran for 192 yards on 30 carries with a pair of touchdowns and caught two passes for 43 yards and a touchdown for Lamar (4-4, 3-3). Joe Minden completed 11-of-18 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns, while Devonn Brown caught five passes for 130 yards and two scores.
"Harrington had a couple of times where his talent showed and got loose, but I do believe we did a pretty good job – as a matter of fact we did as good if not better than most people in terms of tackling him," Shealy said. "I thought that was a positive, so I'm proud of some of those things we did, so I think we'll find there are a lot of good things that went in to trying to stop him."
Lloyd Julian led the Cardinals with nine tackles, while Seth Ellis made six and returned a punt for a touchdown. DaQuan Stewart and Davon Jernigan each had interceptions.
Lamar received the opening kickoff and quickly struck on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Minden to Harrington. Later in the quarter, Minden found Brown for another 29-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0. Alex Ball added a 49-yard field goal early in the second quarter and a 27-yarder with 9:10 remaining in the half to put the Cardinals ahead, 20-0.
Harrington scored on a seven-yard run, then Minden found Brown again for a 45-yard touchdown to give Lamar a 34-0 lead.
On the Huskies' final drive of the half, Dawson ran for 11 yards for a first down, then completed 10-yard passes to
Wesley Lewis and D'Angelo Wallce. Dawson scrambled left then tip-toed the sideline for a 34-yard touchdown run to put HBU on the board.
In the second half, Seth Ellis returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown, and Harrington rushed seven times on a drive that ended with his nine-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, Carson Earp did all the work on the Cardinals' scoring drive, starting with a 35 yard run, then runs of three and five yards, then a nine-yard run for a touchdown for the final tally.
The Huskies will have next week off before their final two games of the season. HBU will travel to face Stephen F. Austin Nov. 14, followed by the season finale at home against Incarnate Word Nov. 21.
