HBU head coach
Vic Shealy is in his third year at HBU, his first official season, and fifth overall as a head coach. He has a career record of 27-14-1 after his four seasons at Azusa Pacific, which included an NAIA championship.
The Huskies went 3-4 during their developmental season in 2013. The season did not count toward any of the student-athletes' eligibility, but did count toward each player's NCAA five-year clock, so all true freshman who played last year are redshirt freshmen this season. HBU's record and stats are also unofficial, so this season is the first season where the record and stats will be counted for NCAA purposes.
Redshirt freshman running back
B.J. Kelly led HBU in all-purpose yards last season with 770 and led the Huskies with 539 rushing yards for an average of 89.8 per game and tied for the team lead with five touchdowns. Redshirt freshman running back Craig Bell also rushed for five scores. Senior wide receiver
Darian Lazard led the Huskies with 22 receptions and 256 yards, but redshirt freshman
Wesley Lewis paced the team with three TD catches.
On defense, redshirt freshman linebacker
Garrett Dolan led the team with 52 tackles, while redshirt freshman safety
Taylor Thompson had four interceptions. Junior kicker
Travis Shinn was perfect, going 18-for-18 on extra points and 3-for-3 on field goals.
McMurry went 3-8 last season, averaging 38.5 points per game. The Warhawks return their top two rushers in Chris Simpson, who ran for 842 yards and seven TDs, and Paxton Grayer, who had 822 yards and seven TDs. Wide receiver Jeret Smith, who made 61 catches for 846 yards and 10 TDs should be the go-to target for junior quarterback Matthew McHugh, after the departure of Greg Livington (87 rec., 1,273 yards, 17 TDs). Cornerback Desmond Guy was a second-team All-NCCAA selection and made 96 tackles.
The Huskies will hit the road for the next two weeks, taking on Northern Colorado Sept. 13 in Greeley, Colo., followed by Texas College Sept. 20 in Tyler, Texas. HBU returns home and begins its first season of Southland Conference play Sept. 27 against Abilene Christian on Family Weekend.
