The Huskies (0-2) are led defensively by their freshman linebacking corps of
Garrett Dolan, who leads the Southland and ranks third in nation with 15.0 tackles per game and has 2.5 sacks,
Terrell Brown III, who has 18 tackles, and
Cody Moncure, who has 11 stops. As a team, HBU has nine sacks on the year, with junior defensive end
Josh Jones recording a pair which both directly led to scores. Freshman safety
Taylor Thompson and junior cornerback
Mike Cole each have an interception.
On offense, sophomore quarterback
Jonathan Fleming has completed 41-of-74 passes for 338 yards and a touchdown. Freshman running back
B.J. Kelly has 113 rushing yards, and freshman
Larry Day has 70 yards and a touchdown. Freshman wide receiver
Wesley Lewis leads the Huskies with 10 catches for 84 yards, and senior tight end
Kenneth Bibbins has 10 catches for 75 yards. Freshman wide receiver
D'Angelo Wallace has made eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Texas College (0-3) is also seeking its first win before it begins conference play. The Steers are led by quarterback Curtez Griffin, who has completed 26-of-45 passes for 311 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Wide receiver Phillip Callier has 15 of those caches for 216 yards, and Bradford Lewis has 12 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown. Running back Edward Burns has 32 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. Defensive tackle Justin Herman leads Texas College defensively with 17 tackles and safety Taurean Trahan and cornerback Alonzo Roberson each have 15 tackles. DeVontae Morris has the Steers lone interception of the year.
Last season, HBU defeated Texas College, 49-7, Nov. 2 at Crusader Stadium in Houston. Kelly rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown, Day scored two touchdowns, and
Craig Bell Jr. and
Jackie Robinson Jr. each scored once, as the Huskies totaled 269 yards on the ground and five rushing TDs. Thompson had two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, and a fumble recovery, and Dolan made a season-high 13 tackles. For the Steers, Griffin completed 12-of-23 passes for 115 yards but was picked off twice. Taylor Gray ran for 90 yards on 20 carries.
The Huskies will return home for their first-ever Southland Conference game when they host Abilene Christian for Family Weekend Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Husky Stadium. The game will be streamed live by FOX Sports Southwest and shown later on the network on tape delay.
