HOUSTON – Sophomore defender
Kristi O'Brien's header with nine minutes left in regulation tied the match, as HBU and Houston battled to a 1-1 stalemate Friday evening at Carl Lewis Field.
"I am very proud of the effort tonight," said head coach
Misty Jones. "We had a lot of girls play 110 minutes and play really hard. We were shooting and putting balls on target. We had five shots in the second overtime. The keepers did a great job. At one point, we had a freshman keeper, freshman defender, freshman midfielder, and a freshman forward on the field. We want to replicate the effort Sunday and be ready for conference play."
All 10 field starters had at least a shot for HBU (1-4-1), as
Natalie Hager had a match-high five shots.
Stephanie Castellon made three saves in 45 minutes. Freshman
Katie Turner saw her first collegiate action in the second half and overtimes, as she made three saves and allowed a goal in 65 minutes, earning the tie.
Selena Peters led Houston (1-2-2) with four shots. Jordan Brown made five saves and allowed a goal between the pipes.
Both teams entered halftime tied 0-0. Houston outshot the Huskies, 9-2, as Castellon made three saves. Brown stopped one shot for the Cougars. Houston had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cougars had a golden opportunity to take the lead early, as the Huskies turned the ball over in their own zone and Peters chipped the ball over Castellon, but the ball rolled just wide.
In the second half, Hager had a shot up the slot that was saved by Brown. A few minutes later, the Cougars had an opportunity themselves, but
Casey Basso made a fantastic defensive effort to kick the ball out of harm's way.
In the 71
st minute, Meghan Brascia took a free kick and Lexa Green battled for a header, which she won, turned to her left, and scored in the upper right corner for a 1-0 Cougars lead.
HBU tied the match at 1-all with just nine minutes left in regulation, as
Ellee Hall took a corner kick and O'Brien headed it past Brown.
Houston almost ended things in the latter half of the first overtime, but Georgi Dolenci's shot hit the crossbar.
With under a minute left to go in the second overtime, Hager beat the keeper, but her shot hit the crossbar.
