Hager Scores in Women’s Soccer’s Hard-Fought Loss

Senior’s goal was the first allowed by the Miners all season

EL PASO, Texas – Senior forward Natalie Hager's goal tied the match at 1-1, but UTEP's Angela Cutaia scored her second goal of the day a minute later to give the Miners a 2-1 win over HBU Sunday afternoon.

Hager led HBU (1-3-0) with three shots and two on target. Sophomore Morgan Dean had the other shot on goal. Senior Patty Walrath made four saves in the hard-fought effort between the pipes.

Cutaia led all players with six shots and five shots on goal for UTEP (4-0-1). Five other Miners had one shot attempt. Sarah Dilling earned the win in goal, as she allowed one goal and made two saves.

Walrath made three saves in the first half as both teams entered the break in a scoreless draw. UTEP was not able to cash in on three corner kick opportunities in the opening half.

UTEP wasted little time taking a 1-0 lead in the second half, as the Miners were awarded a corner kick two minutes in. Hannah Nicholson took the kick and Cutaia headed it into the far post at the 47:14-mark.

Cutaia narrowly scored her second goal of the match in the 67th minute, as her shot attempt hit the cross bar.

Hager tied the match at 1-all in the 68th minute, assisted by senior Lindsay Matlock. Matlock's throw-in found Hager, who headed the ball past Dilling. It was the first goal allowed by Dilling this season.

One minute later, Cutaia did score her second goal of the match, assisted by Carmen Webster. Walrath punched Webster's cross pass, but right to Cutaia, who buried home the rebound for a 2-1 UTEP lead.

Hager tried for her second goal of the afternoon three minutes after UTEP took the lead, but Dilling made the save.

HBU plays in its home opener next Friday, Sept. 5, against Montana at 7 pm. The match is part of a doubleheader with the men's team, who hosts Oral Roberts at 5 pm.
